Surge in Bali Travel Among Australians Leads to Increased Insurance Claims

Common Travel Risks and the Importance of Adequate Coverage

Surge in Bali Travel Among Australians Leads to Increased Insurance Claims?w=400
The allure of Bali continues to captivate Australian travellers, with a notable 43% increase in travel insurance policies purchased for the destination since the 2022/23 summer season.
This surge has corresponded with a 50% rise in related insurance claims, now accounting for 16% of all claims submitted to Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) in 2024.

Among the most frequent issues reported are gastrointestinal illnesses, often referred to as 'Bali belly,' which saw a 79% increase in claims in January 2025 compared to the previous year. Other prevalent incidents include injuries from scooter accidents and encounters with local wildlife, such as monkey bites.

Medical costs associated with these incidents can vary significantly, ranging from minor expenses to substantial amounts exceeding $30,000. For instance, SCTI reported a case involving a young traveller who experienced seizures and required an air ambulance evacuation costing approximately $232,000.

These statistics highlight the critical importance of securing comprehensive travel insurance before embarking on trips to Bali. Travellers should ensure their policies cover potential medical emergencies, including those resulting from common activities like scooter riding. Additionally, it's advisable to exercise caution with local cuisine and interactions with wildlife to mitigate health risks.

By understanding the specific risks associated with Bali travel and obtaining appropriate insurance coverage, Australian travellers can enjoy their holidays with greater peace of mind, knowing they are protected against unforeseen events.
