What Genetic Testing Reform Could Mean for Income Protection Applicants

Fairer underwriting is welcome, but policy details still matter

What Genetic Testing Reform Could Mean for Income Protection Applicants?w=400

Australia’s move to restrict the use of adverse genetic test results in life insurance underwriting is an important development for people who have been hesitant to explore personal cover.
While the reform is usually discussed in relation to life insurance, it also matters for income insurance because many retail policies sit within the broader life insurance framework.

The key issue is confidence. Genetic testing can help people understand health risks, make treatment decisions and participate in preventive care. Yet some Australians have worried that a test result showing an elevated risk of future illness could affect their ability to obtain cover, increase premiums or lead to exclusions. If reforms reduce that fear, more people may feel comfortable seeking medical information without feeling they are putting their financial safety net at risk.

For income protection applicants, the practical takeaway is encouraging but not simple. A restriction on the use of genetic test results does not remove standard underwriting. Insurers may still assess current health, symptoms, diagnosed conditions, occupation, income, lifestyle, past claims and other relevant information allowed under the rules. In other words, reform may narrow one sensitive area of assessment, but it does not turn income protection into automatic acceptance.

This is particularly relevant for workers with family health concerns, self-employed people without paid sick leave, and households that rely heavily on one regular income. If illness or injury stops work, the difference between having a suitable policy and having no cover can be significant. The reform also reinforces why disclosure remains critical. Applicants should answer questions accurately, read policy documents carefully and understand how exclusions, waiting periods and benefit periods apply.

It is also a reminder that pre-existing conditions are still treated differently from predictive genetic information. A diagnosed medical condition, current treatment plan or recent symptoms may still influence underwriting. That distinction can be confusing, especially where family history, genetic risk and personal medical history overlap.

For consumers, the best response is to stay informed and review cover before a health event makes choices narrower. If you are unsure how your medical history, occupation or income pattern could affect an application, seeking professional advice can help you compare policy structures and avoid assumptions. Genetic testing reform is a positive step for fairness, but choosing income insurance still comes down to matching the policy to your real financial risks.

Fresh motor insurance commentary across the Australian market is again pointing to a practical issue truck operators know well: repairing vehicles is becoming more complex, more expensive and, in some cases, slower. Recent complaints data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority has again highlighted a pressure point that matters to rural Australia: insurance claims can become difficult when expectations, policy wording and evidence do not line up. While the figures cover the wider insurance market rather than farms alone, the themes are highly relevant for agricultural businesses dealing with storm damage, fire losses, machinery failures, fencing repairs or interrupted operations. - read more
Compensation Rules Put Professional Indemnity Cover Back in Focus
Compensation Rules Put Professional Indemnity Cover Back in Focus
19 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Fresh industry attention on ASIC's expectations for compensation arrangements is a timely reminder that professional indemnity insurance should not be treated as a once-a-year renewal task. For Australian professionals who provide advice, compliance support, financial services, consulting, design, technology or outsourced business services, the adequacy of cover depends on how closely the policy matches the work actually being performed. - read more
