Insurance Complaint Trends Are a Timely Warning for Tradies

Better records, clearer cover and faster action can make a difficult claim easier to manage

Insurance Complaint Trends Are a Timely Warning for Tradies?w=400

Fresh complaint trends across the Australian insurance market are another reminder that the real test of any policy often comes after something has gone wrong.
While many disputes involve household cover, the same pressure points can affect tradies who rely on tools, vehicles, plant, public liability cover and income protection to keep work moving.

The latest industry focus is on claim delays, communication breakdowns, disputed outcomes and customer confusion about what is actually covered. For a sole trader or small trade business, these issues are not just administrative headaches. A delayed tool theft claim can mean cancelled jobs. A slow vehicle assessment can leave a ute off the road. A disputed liability claim can tie up time, cash flow and client relationships.

The practical lesson is that insurance should not be treated as a set-and-forget purchase. Tradies need to understand the limits, exclusions, excesses and conditions that apply before a claim starts. This is especially important for portable tools, subcontractor use, work at height, hot works, excavation, contract works, hired-in plant and business interruption. These are areas where a policy might include sub-limits, security requirements or wording that only becomes obvious when a loss occurs.

Good record keeping can also make a major difference. Before renewal, tradies should update tool lists, photos, serial numbers, purchase receipts and current replacement values. If the business has grown, taken on bigger jobs or bought more equipment, old sums insured may no longer match the real exposure. Using a structured way to estimate practical insurance sums insured can help identify gaps before they become expensive.

When a claim happens, speed and detail matter. Notify the insurer promptly, keep damaged items where safe to do so, take photos, report theft to police, save job records and write down the timeline of events. If a third party is involved, avoid admitting fault before the insurer has assessed liability. Clear evidence can reduce back-and-forth and help the insurer understand the loss quickly.

For tradies comparing cover, the message is simple: price matters, but wording matters more. A cheaper policy with tight limits or unclear conditions may cost more in the long run if it fails to respond when the business is under pressure. If the wording is difficult to interpret, speaking with a licensed insurance broker can help translate the fine print into practical risk decisions.

With complaints still highlighting pressure in the claims experience, tradies should use renewal time to ask sharper questions: what events are covered, what evidence is required, how quickly claims are assessed, and whether the policy reflects how the business actually works today.

Australia’s engineered stone ban and continuing regulator focus on silica exposure are more than a workplace safety issue for builders, renovators, tilers, stonemasons, plumbers, electricians and demolition contractors. Fresh motor insurance commentary across the Australian market is again pointing to a practical issue truck operators know well: repairing vehicles is becoming more complex, more expensive and, in some cases, slower. Recent complaints data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority has again highlighted a pressure point that matters to rural Australia: insurance claims can become difficult when expectations, policy wording and evidence do not line up. While the figures cover the wider insurance market rather than farms alone, the themes are highly relevant for agricultural businesses dealing with storm damage, fire losses, machinery failures, fencing repairs or interrupted operations. - read more

Compensation Rules Put Professional Indemnity Cover Back in Focus
19 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Fresh industry attention on ASIC's expectations for compensation arrangements is a timely reminder that professional indemnity insurance should not be treated as a once-a-year renewal task. For Australian professionals who provide advice, compliance support, financial services, consulting, design, technology or outsourced business services, the adequacy of cover depends on how closely the policy matches the work actually being performed. - read more
