Survey Highlights Alarming Number of Australians Travelling Uninsured

The Risks and Realities of Foregoing Travel Insurance

Survey Highlights Alarming Number of Australians Travelling Uninsured?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Recent research conducted by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has unveiled a concerning trend: approximately 14% of Australian travelers embark on international journeys without any form of travel insurance.
This statistic has prompted industry leaders to urge Australians to reconsider the importance of securing adequate coverage before traveling abroad.

The survey, which included 1,001 participants, found that younger travelers under 30 and those born overseas are particularly prone to traveling uninsured, with 23% of both groups admitting to not purchasing travel insurance for their most recent trips. A significant portion of these individuals cited perceived safety of their destination (31%) and the belief that insurance offers poor value (27%) as reasons for forgoing coverage.

Damien Arthur, Executive Head of Travel at Allianz Partners Australia, expressed concern over this mindset, emphasizing that unforeseen incidents can occur regardless of a destination's safety profile. He highlighted that medical emergencies, accidents, and travel disruptions can lead to substantial financial burdens for those without insurance.

For instance, medical incidents accounted for over 40% of travel insurance claims handled by nib Travel in 2024, with some individual claims exceeding $3 million. Such figures underscore the potential financial risks travelers face when uninsured.

To mitigate these risks, travelers are encouraged to assess their insurance needs carefully and select policies that provide comprehensive coverage tailored to their specific travel plans. Consulting with insurance professionals and utilizing resources like the Smartraveller website can aid in making informed decisions.

In conclusion, while the allure of international travel is strong, ensuring adequate protection through travel insurance is essential. By securing appropriate coverage, travelers can enjoy their journeys with peace of mind, knowing they are safeguarded against unforeseen events.
